Foods that You Should Buy "Organic"

Have you ever heard of the "Dirty Dozen"? No, I'm not talking about the 1967 movie starring world-class actor Ernest Borgnine. I'm talking about the 12 foods that are the most contaminated with pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals.

The Dirty Dozen

It's hard to believe that in a world of organic foods, organic hair care products, organic mattresses and even organic fuel, foods exist that are still polluted and dangerous. However, the truth is that there are still many farms that still prefer to use the easy methods of growing their foods, rather than going with the safe, healthy methods.

I'm not recommending that all farmers should go to the extreme of growing everything according to "organic" standards, as a lot less food would be grown if farmers only adhered to these standards. It's much more expensive to grow organic foods, and the cost of our food would rise drastically if every produce grower around the country went organic.

However, there's a difference between organic food and food that is grown safely. This involves keeping the dangerous pesticides, herbicides, and hormones out of the food, and it's amazing when you realize that a lot of the foods on your table are grown with these harmful substances.

The Environmental Working Group released a guide to help people understand just how much harmful chemicals can be found in the food we eat. The "Dirty Dozen" is the name given to the 12 foods that contain more chemicals than any others, which are:
  1. Strawberries
  2. Apples
  3. Nectarines
  4. Bell peppers (orange and red varieties)
  5. Peaches
  6. Blueberries
  7. Collard greens and kale
  8. Grapes
  9. Potatoes
  10. Cherries
  11. Spinach
  12. Celery (this is the food that has the highest amount of chemicals and pesticides in it).
Thanks to this guide, we can all now take care to purchase the "organic" versions of these foods. It's important to try and avoid the pesticides and herbicides used in farming, as they can cause a lot of problems if ingested. By buying the organic versions of these foods, we can keep those toxins and chemicals off our tables.

The Good Foods

The good news: not all veggies are loaded with chemicals. There are a few that will be excellent for you to eat, regardless of whether or not you purchase them "organic" or regular. The top foods that are safe for you to eat include:

  1. Avocadoes
  2. Frozen sweet corn
  3. Mangoes
  4. Pineapples
  5. Asparagus
  6. Frozen sweet peas
  7. Kiwi
  8. Cabbage
  9. Eggplant
  10. Onions (these aromatic veggies have the lowest levels of chemicals in them)
If you want to shop smart, balance out your shopping basket with these foods. You can buy the organic foods recommended on the "Dirty Dozen" list, and you can buy these foods in their non-organic forms. You won't have to worry about chemicals in all of your foods, as you will be eating foods that are grown with the least amount of herbicides and pesticides used in order to balance out the foods that contain more harmful substances.
